I often get asked in store about what is the best way to wash Cashmere? Afterall, Cashmere is such a beautiful material & a lot of people are intimidated by the prospect of washing their luxury item. So, I thought I’d demystify the process a little…
Step 1: Begin with the label
Always start by reading our care label inside your garment. All of our pieces are labelled ‘handwash’ & ‘dry clean’. A dry‑cleaning label often signals finer yarns or woven pieces better left to professionals, but a gentle hand wash at home will also do the trick.
Step 2: Choose your cleanser
Opt for a gentle cashmere or wool shampoo, such as our Nontre. Co Wool and Cashmere Laundry Shampoo, never use harsh detergents with enzymes. For hand‑washing, fill lukewarm (≈30°C) water and dissolve the mild detergent. Soak the garment briefly & gently pressing (don’t scrub), then rinse thoroughly.
Step 3: Careful drying & reshaping
Lay your Cashmere flat on a clean towel, roll it gently to remove excess moisture, then unroll and reshape it to it’s original form. Let it air‐dry completely away from direct heat or sunlight, never tumble dry or hang it up. This will cause the fibres to stretch and deform.
Step 4: De-fuzzing
Pilling is a natural characteristic of Cashmere, even garments of the highest quality will do it so don’t be alarmed if your garment starts to pill. Materials like wool and cashmere pill easily because the fibres tend to be shorter and more finely woven. Use a fine cashmere comb or sweater stone to delicately lift away pills, working lightly. By simply gliding the comb over the fabric you can restore the natural beauty of your clothing.
Step 5: Store with intention
Store your cashmere folded, not hung, to preserve its graceful shape. Use breathable cotton or linen storage bags and place cedar balls or sachets nearby to deter moths. Clean garments before storing seasonally.
Hopefully this answers how to best take care of your beautiful Cashmere. There is something quite visceral about the joy of taking care of beautiful things, so I hope you take some time to enjoy this process, the next time your Cashmere is in need of some love.
